What had commenced with the good God and good people …

The illustrious and powerful Council of Groningen and Ommelanden, after it had opened this new Academy in the interest of scholarship, decided to enrich their academy with a splendid supply of excellent books, lest anything useful for the convenience and the advancement of studies of scholars would be lacking.
And in order for the best choice to be made, they authorized the illustrious and very learned gentleman Ioachim Alting, council and curator of the Academy, to buy a substantial number of books which he considered the most appropriate, and to place these in the new library of the academy.
He finished this in the year 1618, that is the fourth year of the academy, when the most noble and distinguished gentlemen FREDERICUS COENDERS (who died in the same year), GOSWINUS SCHAFFER, IOANNES RENGERS TEN POST, and Doctor SCHATO GOCKINGA, sollicitor of the Ommelanden, were in charge of the administration of the Academy.
The number of all the books or volumes that had been brought into the library and were placed on its shelves in that year, arranged according to disciplines, is ——— 403.
